Our History

How We Started...

At the January 1957 meeting of St Paul’s U.A. Local #455, several members gave voice to their feeling that they should have their own credit union. The idea was well received by the membership, many of whom were frustrated by the poor, impersonal service they received at big banks, which often treated construction workers as second class citizens. Phone calls were made, and at the next union meeting a field consultant from the Minnesota League of Credit Unions, a state wide trade association for credit unions, addressed the members. He told them how to proceed. The members wasted no time in following through, and on March 20, 1957, the charter for Pipefitters Steamfitters Credit Union was signed. There was no office, or safe, or even a cash register on the day the credit union opened, but the volunteers did have the will to build on their idea, and we have been building ever since.
